Application to join the Psychology Learning Community may be accessed from the Learning Community Web page at www.lc.uncc.edu, click here to apply. You will need the username and password that came with your housing information package.


Please note: the Psychology Learning Community IS NOT a residential community.
Students in the community will need to secure their own housing arrangements.

Fall 2008 Psychology Learning Community
For Fall 2008 we will accept 44 entering freshmen in two sections.
  Students accepted into the Psychology Learning Community will be pre-enrolled into four classes for the Fall 2008 term:
    General Psychology Lecture (PSYC1101-002) MW 11 – 12:15
    General Psychology Lab (PSYC1101-L Sec 002 or 006) T or R 8 – 9:45
    Global Connections (LBST 2102 -075) TR 2 – 3:15
    Freshmen Seminar (Psychology Learning Community) (UCOL 1200 Sec 014 or 015) R 11 – 1:45
    Students will select an English and Math class to complete their schedule. PLC members who have earned credit for the General Psychology Lecture through AP or other college credit earning programs will be given several alternative for the Lecture class.
Students who want to be members of the Psychology Learning Community will need to comply with the following requirements:
  1. List Psychology as their primary major on their UNC Charlotte application.
  2. Complete the Learning Communities Application. The application may be found on the Learning Communities Web page at www.lc.uncc.edu
  3. Attend a Freshmen SOAR program during June and July 2008

Mission Statement for the Psychology Learning Community
  The Psychology Department at UNC Charlotte is dedicated to providing an excellent learning opportunity for those students with an interest in Psychology. The Learning community will provide first semester freshmen with the skills and knowledge to succeed in this demanding choice of major. Interactions with faculty members, advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and community service providers will expose Psychology Learning Community students to the breath and depth of the field. Your experiences with the Psychology learning Community will help guide you and prepare you for your future in Psychology or other fields.
What is a Learning Community?
  Learning Communities are small groups (22) of students with similar interests who generally take two to four classes together. The Psychology Learning Community does not have a residential component. Members are allowed to select the housing of their choice.
   • Are enrolled in classes together to help enhance the first year experience.
   • Attend special programs and events developed especially for LC students.
   • Develop relationships with some of the Psychology faculty and staff.
   • Participate in service learning projects and activities
Why you should be part of a Learning Community
 
Research demonstrates that students in Learning Communities are more successful in college and have a more positive college experience.
 
You will take courses from faculty that are committed to helping make your first year in college a successful year.  
 
Experience the benefits of a small college experience while enjoying the excitement of attending a major university
 
Become familiar with the vast resources on campus to assist you in becoming the best student you can be.
 
You will get to know people and make friends in your major or area of interest.
 
You will have some fun.
A word to parents
  Learning communities are an important stepping stone for your student. Involvement with learning communities has been linked to:
   • Better Grades
   • Increased satisfaction with the college experience
   • Fewer problems adjusting to university life
   • More consistent progress toward graduation
   • Less dependence on parents for support
   • Increased self-esteem and self-confidence
   • Better retention in college
  We hope you will encourage your student to take advantage of this exceptional learning opportunity
